Oliver Mayhew, one of the youngest soldiers in the Revolutionary War, tells the story of the war for American independence. More than 250 years ago there was no United States of America. Instead, there was a series of English settlements called colonies ... strung together along the Atlantic Coast. The colonists had fled from harsh English laws across the three thousand miles of dangerous Atlantic waters and settled in an unforgiving wilderness where they could practice their religion in peace, and prosper in business. But by the 1700's some colonists felt that the English still had too much control over their lives; they wanted to break away from England and form their own country. This is the story of what ensued and marked the birth of the United States of America.
